Stump Removal

An old stump is more than an eyesore. It is in the way of mowing, it can sprout new shoots, and as it rots it can attract insects. Grinding is the fastest, cleanest way to get rid of it without tearing up the yard digging out the roots.

We grind stumps below the surface for a clean finish, so the area can be filled with soil and planted, seeded or covered with fresh sod.

What's Included

  • Grinding the stump below the surface
  • Grinding visible surface roots near the stump when requested
  • Leveling the grindings in the hole or raking them up
  • Options to backfill with soil and patch with sod
Our Process

How It Works

  1. Check the site

We look at stump size, access (gate width, slopes) and anything nearby such as sprinkler heads, beds or fences.

  2. Utility check

Underground lines should be marked before grinding. Texas 811 provides free line locates — call 811 or submit a request a few days ahead.

  3. Grind

The grinder chips the stump away below the surface. Larger root flares are ground down as well.

  4. Finish

Grindings are leveled or removed, and the area is ready for soil and sod or a new planting.

Local Know-How

After the stump is gone

Wood grindings make good mulch for beds but are a poor base for grass. If the spot is going back to lawn, remove most of the chips and fill with a soil mix before laying sod — grass laid over raw wood chips usually yellows.

On North Texas clay, the filled area will settle a little over a few weeks as rain soaks in. Topping it off once more before sodding keeps the lawn level.

Planting a new tree? Choose a spot a few feet away from the old stump, where old roots won't be in the way.

FAQ

Stump Removal FAQ

How deep do you grind stumps?

Below the surface for a clean finish, so the area can be covered with soil and sod or planted. If you have specific plans for the spot, tell us and we'll grind to suit.

Can you grind a stump in a backyard behind a fence?

Usually, yes. Let us know the gate width when you request an estimate so we bring the right equipment.

Will the stump grow back?

Most trees won't resprout once the stump is ground out. A few species can send up sprouts from remaining roots; these are easy to cut back and stop after a short time.

Can you remove several stumps in one visit?

Yes — grinding several stumps in one trip is common and usually more economical.
